When you choose a new path
We’ve decided, haven’t we, to become traders? Whether part-time, part-time for now or eventually full-time….what we’ve asked of ourselves is to re-identify ourselves as traders.
We’re smart,
We’re capable,
We’re trainable,
We’re responsible…trading is absolutely possible for us.
While that’s true…that doesn’t mean that it will be easy for us.
Consider this:
Throughout your life you have fought through this or that lesson, you have shown strength and tenacity to pull yourself through the times when you felt weak and wanted to give up. You have learned new things, conquered your troubles, chosen re-birth and growth time and time again.
But…
How many times have you been smacked around by the same type of trouble and how many times have you asked yourself, “Why did I make that SAME mistake again?” or “Why can’t I just learn my lessons, once and for all?”
We all do it…our person, these circumstances, this LIFE, has certain lessons for us. No, not lessons, opportunities. This LIFE offers us opportunities to develop, overcome, (dare I say it?)…evolve. Believe it or not we CAN learn, change, grow and evolve. However, most people have made it a habit of putting the ‘problem’ behind them when the problem seems over. And by not carefully integrating the experience into our character we lose the opportunity to grow from it.
What I want to put to you is this:
Trading for a living is a wonderful new path to be on. But the reason it is not easy is because it will bring to the forefront all of your unattended foibles and quirks. It has to! As life becomes more intense, as your experiences become more involved, every little weakness that has not been addressed, explored and resolved is amplified. So why should trading (which is also extremely intense and involved) be any different?
If you suffer from a lack of confidence (or overconfidence) in life, that will defeat you in trading.
If you suffer from an inability to concentrate on a project and see things through to the end, that will defeat you in trading.
If you’ve never been able to stay organized and methodical, that will defeat you in trading.
(You could replace the work ‘trading’ in these sentences with other experiences in life to see the patterns: “dating”, “the workplace”, “sports”, etc.)
Truth be told, people have been known to flip a coin and be just as successful as the person who analyzed the trade like crazy. The market can do whatever the heck it wants, whenever the heck it wants. So, how does anyone ever make any sense of it?
They don’t…but they do eventually learn to make sense of themselves. (The lessons don’t change, we’ve only chosen to change the context of them.) And in so doing, learn to translate that whole and complete picture into all facets of their lives, including trading.
Take time to reflect and learn from this experience and alway, always, be good to yourselves. :)
